UKZN Bursaries are offered to students who are needy and display strong academic abilities. There are thousands of students looking for bursaries and it is impossible to allocate them all with financial aid. Bursaries offer alternative option for financing studies. Bursaries also have the advantage: students don’t have to pay them back.

Student Funding administered bursaries (mostly for returning undergraduate students at UKZN) are usually awarded after Registration to financially needy applicants whose current Gross Family Income does not exceed R150,000 per year and who pass 100% of their registered courses in the previous year’s exam sessions and, who achieve an average mark above 64.5% in those same courses.
The value of the bursary may be decided by the specific sponsor but will not exceed full study costs.
Higher average marks will achieve higher bursary values.
In 2012 a student achieving above 74.5% may be awarded a bursary valued at R25,000;
whereas a student achieving below 74.5% but above 64.5% may be awarded a bursary valued at R12500.
These bursaries are usually derived from Deceased Estates or Company Social Responsibility monies.
Students on NSFAS Loan/bursaries will have those awards adjusted after allocation of one of the above.
External sponsorship of the same students will also create an adjustment to the values awarded.
Our five biggest sponsors of Internally administered bursaries are:
> The Emma Smith Educational Trust
> The Cecil Renaud Educational Trust
> The Victor Daitz Foundation
> The Terry & Gladys Champain Educational Trust
> The United Kingdom Trust (see their website if you wish to make overseas donations for bursaries(
For additional sponsors external to the University please consult the External donors link for the database on the same website.
Contract bursaries
A contract bursary is usually offered by a Company or organisation as part of their Human Resource initiative and entails working for the Donor for at least one year for every year sponsored (at the normal salary applicable to the job).
The University of KwaZulu-Natal acknowledges with gratitude annual donations made by the following donors. You are automatically considered for these bursaries when you apply for Financial Aid according to the policies and parameters operating at the time of application and the specific criteria of the Donor.

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, will officially launch PRASA’s “On The Job” Built Environment Training Programme as a result of a partnership between the Passenger Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

This initiative will offer “on the job” training to students in the built environment sector and would form part of PRASA’s preparations for the acquisition of the new rolling stock (trains) over the next 20 years. This will be carried out through PRASA’s Real Estate Management Unit, PRASA Corporate Real Estate Solutions.

The partnership follows a proposal by the Deputy Minister Manana to make sector skills training and development a priority especially the built environment as is one of the critical areas that have been deemed to be experiencing a shortage of in-depth skills in South Africa.

Working with the post-school learning institutions, PRASA and DHET have identified 40 students, between the age of 21 – 35 from previously disadvantaged communities who have made it through their academic training programs to be employed on PRASA’s Built Environment and Training Programme.

These students would be employed for a period of three months, during which they would receive supervision from experienced professionals in the built environment. The identified areas of training for the first phase includes: B-Tech Architecture, B-Tech Construction Management, and B-Tech Quantity Surveyor.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal UK Trust aims to fulfil its objects by raising funds to provide bursaries for needy students at the University. Its bursaries normally cover about half a student’s costs, but more money is provided for students who achieve better academic success, in line with the University’s policy on bursaries.
Students must have completed successfully their first-semester exams in their first year of study, as well as any subsequent exams/further years, to qualify for a Trust bursary. This policy aims to provide reassurance to Trust donors that bursars have a good chance of passing their exams and graduating. Following recent changes to government funding for students’ fees, the Trust does not provide bursaries for final-year students where their fees are covered by state support. Visit Ukzn Trust official website for full bursaries details
